Somedays as soon as you get out of your bed or get up from your chair after a long duration, you will feel some pain in your back region near your neck and shoulders. That can really be very painful which is more than enough to make your day to be frustrating one when you are not able to treat it. In this fast-paced life, we tend to get a lot of health issues which could be minor at the initial stages. But then, as days go on these issues tend to become the most harmful one that could affect our health and the body. Among them, one of the most common health issues which many of us starting from the teenage to the old people face is the Stiff neck problem. This will lead to an acute pain in your neck region which will last till the end of your back. The main reason for the Stiff neck problem would be the posture that we opt while driving, sitting, sleeping and many more. Also, many of the other factors like more physical works, applying more pressure on your neck regions could also lead to such issues. So in this article, we are going to see some of the simple remedies that can be very helpful in dealing with the Stiff neck issues in our body. You can absolutely follow them by using the given guidelines to get a speedy recovery from the stiff neck problems. 

Different Remedies For Stiff Neck

When it comes to Stiff neck problems, the factors that cause this issue are huge enough. So, there are a wide variety of remedies that are available to cure Stiff neck problem based on their causing factor. Following are some of the best and the most effective remedies that can be done or followed regularly to get rid of the pain in your neck region and the other stiff neck issues. 

#1. Rub Your Neck Region

Gently rubbing your neck region where you are having pain can really help you in offering relief from it. You have to follow certain steps while rubbing your neck to get rid of the stiff neck problem. 

How To Perform?

  1. Firstly, you have to find the apt spot where you feel the pain on your neck.
  2. When you place your fingers on the spot, you can find a knot in that place which would be too tiny in size. 
  3. So, you have to start pushing that knot gently using your fingertips.
  4. Gently start rubbing the knot until your back region. Continue doing the same in your back portions and hips till the lower portion until you feel somewhat comfortable.
  5. While rubbing you can turn your head in the opposite direction to the one where you have the cramp.
  6. You can get help from your family members and friends for doing this. You can tell the spot and ask them to do it as per the given guidelines.

#2. Stretching 

Whenever you feel pain in our hands or legs, the first and foremost thing that we do would be to stretch it. Stretching will often give relief from the muscle pain in that particular area of our body. When we stretch the muscles in that region will get expanded and thus will lead to the blood circulation in that area. Also, if you have any muscle spasms, then you will really feel better if you stretch your hand. Likewise, there are a few stretches which will be very helpful when you experience Stiff neck pain and other symptoms in your body. 

Shoulder To Ear Stretch

  1. Firstly, bend your head to one side until the ear touches your shoulder portion. 
  2. Then you can place your hand on your head which is facing in the upward direction. This can be done if you want a deeper stretch.
  3. Slightly add pressure using your hands without pulling your head. 
  4. While doing this you have to breathe in and out as you do for the other exercises.
  5. Then return back to the normal position.
  6. Continue doing this vice versa until you feel comfortable. 

Back Of Head To Upper Back Stretch

  1. In this, you have to lift your head up and drop your head in the backward direction.
  2. This should be done until your head touches or goes near your back portion. 
  3. Also, you have to breathe in and out during this.
  4. Then you can go back to the normal position after doing this. 

Chin To Chest Stretch

  1. This is somewhat similar to the back of the head to upper stretch.
  2. In that, you would have bent in the backward direction whereas in this you should be bending towards the forward direction.
  3. You should bend your head in the forward direction until your chin touches or goes near your chest region. 
  4. The same way inhale and exhale the air before returning to the normal position. 

Hands Clasped Behind Back Stretch

  1. For this, you have to stand in a straight position.
  2. Then bring both o your hands behind your back and clasp them together.
  3. Now slowly push your hands away from your back. While doing this, your shoulder blades should be squeezed as you move them far away from your body.
  4. Hold on for a few seconds and then return back to the normal position when you feel uncomfortable.
  5. In this also, you have to inhale and exhale the air while doing the stretch. 

Side To Side Stretch

  1. In this, you have to turn your head towards one side fully as much as you can.
  2. Make sure that you do not use your hands while doing this for turning your head.
  3. After turning to one side inhale and exhale the air and return to the normal position.
  4. Then continue doing the same thing on the other side of your neck region. 

#3. Applying Cold And Hot Compress

When it comes to any kinds of pain, it is always better to prefer for the cold before the heat. When you apply the cold to your neck region, it will help in the reduction of the lactic acid build up in that region. Also, it reduces any inflammations and pain in that region. When you apply heat first, there are many chances for the muscles to get tightened which would increase the pain in that area. Follow the steps that are given below to get relief from the stiff neck problem. 

How To Perform?

Cold Compress

  1. Firstly, you have to cool down the knot that is there in your neck region.
  2. For this, you have to take one plastic cover and fill it with the ice cubes. Then wrap the plastic cover completely using a towel.
  3. Now place the towel wrapped ice bag gently on your neck where you feel the pain.
  4. You can place it between your shoulders or at the back portion of your head. 
  5. You have to apply the ice bag in that area for about 20 minutes.

Hot Compress

  1. Once the cold compress is completed, you have to leave a small gap in between for about 4 to 5 minutes.
  2. Then you have to apply heat to the same portion of your neck. This will help in increasing the blood circulation in that area.
  3. So, you can either fill a bottle with hot water or soak a towel completely in hot water and squeeze it to remove the water. You have to place the bottle or the towel in the same area where you placed the cold compress in your neck region. 
  4. You can also prefer the heating pad or taking a hot shower bath. 
  5. Make sure that this also lasts for about 20 minutes to get better results.

#4. Massaging Your Neck

Massaging can be one of the best methods which can be preferred for loosening the muscles when you have any pain or knots in any parts of your body. So, you can offer a massage to your neck portion when you have the stiff neck problem. 

How To Perform?

  1. You have to use your fingertips while you wanted to do a massage.
  2. Focus on the area where you experience the pain in your neck region. 
  3. You can either massage with your bare hands.
  4. Or you can use a small amount of coconut oil for massaging your neck.
  5. Place your fingertips on that neck area and press it by giving a little pressure on it.
  6. Slowly move your fingertips along your neck region where you feel the pain.
  7. Do this for almost 5 to 10 minutes.
  8. Continue doing this whenever you find free time.
  9. You can do this as many times as you need until you get relief from the pain.
  10. Also, make sure that you don't press it too hard as it might cause inflammations or too much pain.
  11. You can also prefer going to the massage centers where the professional will be doing massage for you.

#5. Soak Your Neck Region

Soaking your body in the warm water is known to be one of the best remedies for Stiff neck problems. Adding a little amount of Epsom salt into the water can do a lot of miracles in treating your pain. The Epsom salt could play a vital role in soothing your muscles from the pain. The Epsom salt will contain some of the minerals like the magnesium and the sulfates in them. These mineral components will help in reducing the inflammations and the pain in that region. Also, the blood flow in that part of your body will be increased such that the pain will be reduced in your neck. 

How To Perform?

  1. Fill your bathtub fully with hot water. 
  2. The temperature of the water should be bearable when you enter inside the bathtub and soak your body.
  3. Now take one medium-sized cup filled with the Epsom salt. 
  4. Add the Epsom salt kept in the bowl into the hot water kept in the bathtub. If you prefer for the small cups then you have to add the salt twice into the water. 
  5. Wait for a few seconds for the salt to get dissolved in the hot water.
  6. Stir the water kept in the bathtub well for making it get dissolved.
  7. Then enter inside the bathtub and soak your body completely inside the Epsom salt water.
  8. Make sure that your neck portion where you feel the pain is also soaked inside the salt water in the bathtub. 
  9. Stay inside the water until you can bear the temperature. Make sure that you stay for at least a few minutes of about 10 to 15 minutes inside the water.
  10. Continue doing this every day to get rid of the pain and the other stiff neck issues.

Sleeping habits could play a vital role in serving to be one of the main causes of stiff neck problems. Many times we do not realize that the pain we get on our shoulder, arms, neck and hands might be due to the sleeping position that we had last night. So, making certain modifications in your regular sleeping habits can also help you to get rid of such stiff neck problems. There are some of the key points that should be noted regarding your sleeping position. Those key points are as follows.

  1. Take a small bowl and add 1 or 2 camphor pieces in it.
  2. Break the camphor until it turns to a fine powder.

  4. Wait until the camphor powder gets completely dissolved in the water.
  5. Now start applying the camphor mixture on the area where you have pain in your neck. 
  6. As soon as you apply it you will fell that region becoming warm.

  1. Capsaicin is one of the chili pepper extracts which can be used for obtaining relief from the pain.
  2. These are available in the form of creams which can be easily brought from the nearby medical stores.
  3. You can apply those creams on the respective areas to reduce the pain in your neck region.

While doing these motion exercises, make sure that you do them slowly and do not rush as it might spoil the benefits that can be obtained out of it. There are a wide variety of motion exercises which are meant for different purposes. Some of the Motion exercises that can be done for getting rid of the Stiff neck problem are as follows. 

You can prefer for doing them regularly for about 10 counts in both the directions. This can really be very helpful in making your muscles to be healthy and fit.  If you have severe Stiff neck issues, then these exercises might be a difficult one for you when compared to the stretches. Also, do not forget to breathe in and breathe out as you follow in all the other exercises.

Many studies have also proved that meditation can make your mind and body to get calm down for a certain duration of time which would make you be fit and healthy by both mentally and physically. 

#15. Limit The Usage Of Gadgets

Handling devices like mobile, laptop by sitting in the wrong and uncomfortable postures can also lead to Stiff neck problems. So, when you use those gadgets by sitting in such wrong postures for a longer duration, there are many chances for some changes to occur in the blood circulation, muscles in that portion of your body. So, this will eventually cause a lot of pain in that portion of your body. So, when you use a mobile or laptop try to lift the screen till the height of your neck. Make sure that you do not bend your neck and stay in that position for a longer duration of time. Also, talking over the phone for a longer duration can also cause pain. In order to prevent this, you can either use your headphones or put your phone in speaker and then talk. You have to strictly avoid using your phone by placing in between your shoulders and ears for a longer duration of time.

In addition to all the other exercises, you can also go for doing the strengthening exercises which can be very helpful in strengthening your muscles in the neck region. Apart from your neck region, it also strengthens the other parts of your body like shoulders, back portions, arms and many more. These exercises will also make your body and the muscles to be stable. So, this will eventually help you in offering relief from the pain that you have due to Stiff neck issues. Also, when you do these strengthening exercises make sure that you do them slowly and steadily. Do not rush it as it would give you the opposite effects and might increase the pain.
