Things To Note- Post Piercing

Getting a piercing done is a great experience. It brings out this whole change in the look and enhances your over all persona by adding character and personality to your face. Nose piercing can be done either on the side or as a septum and both of them have very different looks and say very different stories. Using different nose pins also create different looks and personalities all together. Wearing something junk will give a very exotic look whereas when you use a stud or a diamond it will leave an elegant look. A thin ring can be dainty wherein a hanging nose piercing can look very dressy. It totally depends on what you want to do to your own self, the kind of look that you want to create. However beautiful it is, it can come with consequences if you don't take good care of it. Here is a routine that you can follow which will keep your pierced area protected and away from all sorts of infection.

Always Keep The Area Clear

While piercing sounds interesting, keeping it clean and away from pus can get really tedious. However, it is important. The first step in doing so is to always keep it dry and away from unwanted moisture. Make sure that if it is possible then remove your piercing, rinse the area thoroughly and then pat it dry to wear it again. If possible, sterilize the stud or the ring whichever you have got pierced every now and then as it is metal and it can cause an infection. However it is important that you note that this step comes pretty later. You should not be removing your piercing at least for a month counting from the day your get your nose pierced. It can irritate the skin which is tender and cause bleeding.

Check For Infections At All Times

While it might not feel anything or might not even cause a puss, there is a fair chance that you can be growing an infection or at least some sort of a swelling which is quite normal. We would recommend you to keep getting it checked and if you feel it is taking normal than usual then get it checked once too. It is important to keep the pierced area away from painful as well as normal infections that does not pain at all. Both of them can worsen the situation and then cause a lot of bleeding. Also opt for metals that best suit your skin type otherwise even that can be a cause of an infection. Try to keep the area always clean and away from moisture like puss or creams as it can attract bacteria and cause a difficult situation.

Use Home Remedies

It is quite normal to get bums and inflammation what is important is to treat it ASAP before it becomes hazardous. There are lot of natural ingredients which when used on the pierced area can soothe one off the pain and release all this after piercing symptoms. While skin around the earlobe is quite thick and does not cause that big a problem, when done on the nose there is a fair chance that it can cause a keloid or a bum or even an irritation. You have got to treat that and the best way to do that is through natural ingredients. Use them at night if possible as that is when all the wounds in your body is automatically getting repaired. You can also mix and alternate between 1 or 2 remedies to treat yourself fast. Some of the best ingredients are lemon, honey, apple cider vinegar etc.

Stay Clear Of Dry Skin

Dry skin is what causes keloids and it is important that you keep clearing it up from around the pierced area. There is a good amount of chance that you will grow a lot of debris and dryness cause if the area gets infected it will keep producing puss and drying it up, however, the best way you can somehow manage to control this situation is through keeping the area near the pierces nose always away from these. They can also clog up your piercing and further cause fungus of some sort or some skin reaction which will need medical help. So it is better to be safe than sorry.

Let The Piercing Stay

The pain sometimes becomes so unbearable that all you want is to remove the piercing and start all over again, except minus the piercing. Well, think about the effort and pain you went through to get it done. All of that will go to waste. Instead you can bear through the pain for a few days and let the piercing stay even if the area gets infected. Plus do you really want to go through the pain of getting it pierced again? Well, yes. You heard us right. Nose piercing close really quickly. Way faster than your earlobe ones so if take them out there is a good chance they will close up the very next day. Also keeping the piercing on also helps in draining the discharge out which will get a blockage if you remove it. So keep it on and bear through the pain. It will all be worth it.

Get Doctors Help

While there is so much that you can do at home to treat your piercing and take an after care. It is important that you realize that sometimes it is just not in the hands of our liking. If the symptoms prevail till 2 weeks then we suggest get it checked by a doctor. It is not healthy to have puff coming out of your pierced nose for 2 straight weeks. Or even to have an inflammation or a bump. Not just if it is 2 weeks but even if you experience the two different kind of problems around your nose like an infection and a swelling, we would recommend consulting a doctor rather than taking decisions and precautions on your own. If you also experience unusual symptoms that is not common, don't wait till 2 weeks and get them thoroughly checked before it is too late.

Medication Treatment

As much as we love natural ingredients, there is no way to deny that sometimes they are not the most effective way to treat something. Sometimes the piercing can become so infected that using medication to treat it the only option. However, we suggest consulting a doctor before starting on any sort of a medication. They are the right people to suggest you the medicine and if not that then the cream that will help heal the area and keep it healthy. It is also important to use creams that soak quickly even if you don't face any problem after the piercing. They ensure the process is absolutely painless and wouldn't cause a problem in the future. Make sure you ask you piercing artist to give you one.

Immediate Care For Abscess

Abscess is a case where the pierced area create an excess amount of puff. Well, in this case there is no point of waiting and you should consult someone asap. Abscess cannot just risk your health, but it can also lead to scarring. The day you spot something like this happening, rush to a doctor. If it is middle of the night and you cannot get a hold on a doctor, then we suggest going for the warm press as it will help alleviate the drain and when used with an antibiotic, cure it at home as well.

How To Clean A Nose Piercing

It is very important to clean the pierced area in the right way and regularly to avoid any mishaps. Here is a the step by step way of how you can clean your piercing and keep it healthy and beautiful.

Prepare A Solution

Your first step would be to prepare for a solution that you will use to clean the pierced area. You can opt for warm water or use the salt and warm water method over it. It is important that you clean the area at least twice in a day.

Wash Your Hands

You might not be touching the area directly but it is very important to rinse the hands off before touching anything that can catch infection. And well, a piercing is most likely to catch one because it is an open wound. Use some sort of soap while rinsing and not just water. You can also opt for anti bacterial soap or even a little Dettol to ensure that your hands are bacteria free.

Applying The Solution

You have to soak a cotton ball in the saline solution or the warm water and gently take the dry skin off the area by rubbing on it. Make sure you are very gentle with it. Your motto here is to get rid of all the crust that has formed around the piercing. If the crusts seems difficult to come off, dip the cotton in the solution again and apply one more time. You can also hold it where the piercing is if the crusts are really hard as this will transfer the saline to the area and make it softer and easier to detach.

Pat Dry

As much as cleaning the wound is important, keeping it dry at all times is too. The more moisture it will have the most likely it will attract bacteria to itself. To keep it dry, the best thing would be to use a paper towel. You might just go ahead to use a towel but that would be a wrong choice. Using a towel can easily transfer the bacteria from it to the ring or the stud whichever you have used to get the piercing done.

Apply Lavender Oil

While antiseptic creams work brilliantly, it has a lot of moisture that can cause infection. The best way to avoid that is using lavender oil. You can also opt for the remedies that mentioned above as all of them will help your piercing stay healthy too. They are not just in case of problems. It can be used without any problem just to protect the piercing as well. Lavender oil has properties that can heal the wound faster and reduce the time of discomfort for you. It lubricates the piercing without being to oily and works well for the tenderness as well as the swelling and inflammation.

FAQs About  Nose Piercing

Q. Can I use table salt instead of sea salt to make the saline solution for cleaning my piercing? Can it change the affect?

A. You can give it a try but it totally depends upon your skin. Table salt contains iodine which can irritate skin for people who have very sensitive skin. The iodine can also increase the inflammation.

Q. Can my piercing get infected after 1 or 2 years of the piercing?

A. It totally depends on how you maintain the hygiene of the piercing. It can get infected even after a decade if you don't properly clean it. Your piercing is after all a hole which can still attract bacteria and cause infection. Follow an appropriate routine to keep it cleansed at all times.

Q. Can a lump inside the piercing mean an infection?

A. Absolutely. If the lump is painful, resembles and feels like a pimple and is also red and inflamed, there is a great chance that it is infectious. It might be accumulating puss as well which if left unattended can cause some kind of fungus as well.

Q. How can I clean the nose piercing without causing myself pain? A. It is important that you clean your piercing every day to ensure there is no infection. All you have to do is clean it with saline solution using either a Q-tip or a cotton ball. Make sure you clear all the debris and dried skin. Pat dry it so there is no moisture. Apply an antiseptic cream or lavender oil to keep bacteria's away. Repeat this one every day.

Q. Can the salt water sting?

A. It totally depends on how worse your infection is. If it is a lot then it will sting a little but not a lot. The sting can be just like how rubbing alcohol works. The sting will not last you for a long time and in fact will go off very quickly. Make sure your saline solution is properly diluted and especially if you have a sensitive skin or your wound is quite infected.

Q. If my piercing cause redness and bump, how much time will it take to completely get okay?

A. It will take a total of 2-3 months to completely heal the wound after your piercing. You can consult a doctor and take their opinion about which they think would be better to deal with the infection, naturally or by using an antiseptic cream. If the redness or the bump has grown a puss, then it is most likely going to be creams with some antibiotics.

Q. I got my piercing done, how can I figure out if I am allergic to the metal that they have pierced in my nose? What are the symptoms?

A. It is advisable to always get your piercing done from known, renowned places with good artist cause they use the best of the best metals to avoid infection. However, there is a chance that you can be allergic to that "good metal" that he is using. It is very simple to detect it. The area will be red and swollen and might cause a continuous discharge from the piercing. If you leave it on for long then it can also cause bleeding.

Q. I got a nose piercing done and then I caught cold. Because of this there was an infection. I had to take the piercing out and then afterwards I wore it again. What should I do?

A. If wearing it again caused no problem at all, then I think there is no problem. All you have to do is keep cleaning it every now and then using warm water and sea salt solution to ensure that there is no bacteria attack which can cause infection. But if you do face an infection after wearing it again, consult a doctor before trying anything by yourself.

Q. My piercing artist gave me a healing cream to use on my piercing after cleaning it through. Is it safe to use them? I also use a little rubbing alcohol and peroxide.

A. I would recommend you to stop using rubbing alcohol and peroxide over it, as it can cause irritation and further redness. If you invested and got your piercing done from a trusted place then I think the healing cream is more than enough. However, if you see that it is not helping, I would suggest consulting a doctor about it. If you want to quit everything and opt for a natural way to treat it then you can always rely on sea salt and warm water remedy.

Q. Is it advised to take the stud or the ring out in the night when I go to sleep?

A. It totally depends on when you got the piercing done. If it years old then there is no issue but if it is something that you have got recently, then I would suggest no. Nose piercing can close up really quickly if you remove the jewel. Sometimes even in a few hours. Plus there is a good chance that you will irritate the skin by removing and wearing the jewelry every night which will cause discomfort.

Q. Can I go swimming or take a hot shower if I have gotten a piercing done? Is it okay?

A. Not at all. You should completely avoid swimming pools or other water bodies as they can attract a lot of bacteria to your piercing which would eventually cause infection. The ideal time to go in water would be only after 12-24 weeks of getting the piercing done.

Q. How can I clean the inside of the piercing in my nose? Also will it be painful?

A. All you have to do is use a Q-tip in this case. Soak it in the saline solution and put it inside to nose to clean it. Make sure the water isn't dripping from the Q-tip as it can cause discomfort. Now that you have an idea about what you will be getting into when it comes to getting a nose piercing, we hope you can make your decision better. It is not impossible to have a nose piercing that is clean and hygienic. All you have to do is take care of it by following some routine and that will make it so much easier for you in the future. Just imagine the endless possibilities with your jewelery. But that is only possible if you invest your time on them in the initial stages itself. You can choose to go all natural or even use antiseptic cream but make sure that whatever you choose, you always consult it with a doctor before deciding on it because one wrong step can cause a lot of puss and a lot of infection which will make your life miserable because it will make it very difficult to do something as basic as even breathe. It takes a lot of courage to get piercing done but be sure that body modifications will not change your personality but in fact enhance them. So crazy with it and give it enough time and attention and it will repay back in the form of endless compliments
