How to Get Rid Of Bees

Posted 4 months ago by Vani Kambali in

They are small, almost impossible to spot and very difficult to kill. Their constant buzzing in the ears and the risk of them biting can be very scary. It can leave one with scars, swelling and even an inflamed feeling which can be difficult to live with. However irritating they might be, they are extremely important to the humankind because they are excellent pollinators. But that does not mean that they make it any easy to live with them because of this characteristic.

Apart from causing discomfort, they can also cause allergies. Getting the nest or the hive removed will be utmost important in this case cause it can then become a case of life and death. If not allergic, the sting of the bee in itself is impossible to bear with. Depending on the bees, the sting can be extremely painful and very difficult to tolerate.

If it is just one bee, it is not a problem, however, you might never know when they make a house there. To keep yourself safe, it is important to spot the hive. The places they choose to make the hive can be extremely difficult to spot so look for these signs and you will be sure. If there is a hive, there is a sure chance that you will spot excessive bugs, you have dead bees at your yard, there is a contact buzzing sound, an unpleasant odor which does not leave and there are holes in the woods as well.

Kinds Of Bees

However, before jumping onto finding the ways to kill the bees or shift their hives or whichever option you opt for, it is very important to understand the kind of bees that exist and their characteristic so that you can identify the ways to treat them. Not all remedies work on all kinds of bees so it is better to get the basic cleared so that you don't you can deal with this problem in a much professional way.

It also becomes easier to explain to the professional, the problem, when you know the kind of bee you are dealing with. This will save you time and start work fast and make it efficient too.

Honey Bees

We are sure you all must have heard about the phrase "busy as a bee" sometime in your life. Well, it sure is an inspiration from the honey bees. They are hardworking and it shows from the effort that they put when making their hive. Apart from the construction of the hive, they can also travel miles in order to pollinate the plants. They are capable of pollinating more than 100 species of plants and also has the property to stay 300 feet above the ground.

They are bees who generally mind their business but if they see a threat to them or to their hive, they will attack. Their sting can be extremely painful and leave you with a swelling that will be very uncomfortable to deal with. They are usually half an inch long, with hives in a tree or at the corner of walls.

Carpenter Bee

The second most common species is the carpenter bee. They are mostly found in the U.S. Their nests are found on trees as well as on building in nooks and corners. Their way of making the bee is to constantly drill. When it comes to the trees, however, they work by creating new tunnels. They are slightly longer and bigger when compared to the honey bee. They are about 1 and a half inch long. If you are planning to deal with it, we recommend doing it before winters as they tend to hibernate during that time.

Just like the honey bee, the carpenter bee also makes their home in the eaves of a building. The one thing to note about it, however, is that it is only the female carpenter bee which can sting, the male cannot. However, the male tends to get attracted to the movement. So they will sting you if you wave them off.

Bumble Bee

The last famous and most common bee out of all is the bumblebee. It is known as a helpful workhorse. They are the kings when it comes to pollinating. Bumblebee can pollinate between plants, flowers as well as orchards. They are usually the most visible during the spring when there is a lot of choices when it comes to pollinating. These bees are social compared to the honey and the carpenter but their communities are much smaller in number. You can most likely spot them in rodent holes, gaps wood and even compost heaps. They don't like humid and warm places and instead will build their nest in a place which is dry and well protected.

Bumblebee is right in between the honey and the carpenter bee when it comes to their size. They are about half to one inch long. May look plumper when compared to both and also have hairy bodies. They can sting multiple times and their hives, unlike the rest, is made on the ground and not on the wall.

Remedies To Getting Rid Of Bees

Now that you are aware of the types of bees it is important to get rid of them. There are a lot of remedies that you can use in order to keep yourself well protected from these bees. Opt for one which is the most economical and convenient for you.

Repel The Bees

The best way to get rid of bees is to use repellents and other repelling methods. Wearing darker colours can also be a great way when it comes to repelling the bees. Wearing a white, bright yellow, and other noticeable colours will attract bees to you as they look very similar to flowers. Bright colours will attract the bees to you and make them sting you. Fragrances also help in attracting bees so try to stay clear of them.

Especially when it comes to a fragrance that resembles a fragrance similar to a flower then the bee will surely get attracted to it. There also exists a lot of ready-made repellents which you have to just spray and it will protect you from the bees sting. If you want, you can also make a repellent at home. Here is how. Things you will need:

Cinnamon1/8th Tsp
Cayenne Pepper1/8th Tsp
Peppermint OilA few drops
WaterAs required
Liquid Soap2-3 Tsp
Spray Bottle1

Process:

  1. Take a spray bottle, add 1/8th cinnamon, 1/8th Tsp cayenne pepper, a few drops of peppermint oil, 2-3 Tsp of liquid soap and water as required.
  2. Close the spray bottle and shake it well.
  3. Now all you have to do is spray it wherever you have seen the bugs. If you are planning to spray it out, I recommend adding a little more peppermint oil. It will intensify the effect.
The water evaporates and the peppermint left behind will work wonders in order to get the bees away. If you have been facing a lot of problem with it and there are a lot of bugs, then I recommend spraying around the doors, windows, decks, patios and other nook and corner as well. Make sure you cover the lawn chairs, tables and the aisles as well.

Store Food Well

Food is also the biggest reason why the house attracts different kinds of bugs. While it might not attract the honey bees and native bees so much, it can attract wasps and yellow jackets a lot. However, there is a chance that the food which is stored loose can attract them. This, however, is very easy to deal with. All you have to do is keep all the food items properly sealed and packed. Especially the ones that you keep outside. Some things that you can do in order to keep the bees away due to food is to keep everything in a foil or a plastic cover until you finish it.

Especially when it comes to fruits which are mostly not finished in a go, we recommend keeping them saved using the cling foil. Also, store it in the fridge as soon as everyone is done eating. The more it stays out, the more it will be at risk when it comes to attracting bees.

Secure Your Home's Entrance

Prevention is better than cure. We all have learnt it and it is 100% true too. Therefore, when it comes to bees as well, we recommend taking precaution before things go out of hand. Securing the home entrance can be one of those precautions. Sometimes, your home can be in perfect condition but it can be the outside that might be getting the bees to your house. In cases like these, having a secured entrance will work wonders.

Make sure that you have an entrance which has lesser gaps and holes in it. This will make the bees crawl in. Also, there is a chance that they might enter in groups and never leave. In order to avoid it, you can also use expandable foam where there are cracks. This will help you in keeping the bees away if you already have a door with cracks and crevices. Make sure you keep the empty plant container, buckets, garden sheds, empty pipes away. These attract the bees the most as they find a space to build their home.

Bee Sprays

There are a lot of bees sprays also available which you can use if you want to keep them away. They are ready-made fix and all you have to do is spray them in places where you spot the bees or in areas through which they can enter or they are most likely to make their house. The best part about sprays is that it works both as repellents and insecticides. However, be a little careful cause you will have to spray them directly to the bee or onto the hive, in both cases, it can be risky. If you are not confident, we recommend getting it done professionally. Also, if you don't want to use ready made, you can go ahead and use a homemade spray too.  Things you will need

Water1/4th cup
Vinager1 Tsp
Dish washing sprayA few drops

Process:

  1. All you have to do is take a spray bottle, add 1/4th cup of water, 1 Tsp of vinegar and a few drops of dishwashing spray to it.
  2. Close the bottle and shake well so that all the ingredients mix well.
  3. Now all you have to do is spray it in the areas where you spot the bees. You can also spray them on their hives and on the area where they usually enter from.
  4. Keep repeating this till you see them entirely gone.

We will recommend getting it done professionally. They have these professional outfits as well as equipment to do it in the crispest manner. There is a heavy chance that when you do it, you might end up hurting yourself. There is also a fair chance that you might end up with a swollen face instead. So leave the work to the experts.

Bee Catchers

Bee catchers is also a great way to get rid of the bees. A lot of times you might spot the bees but finding their hive can be very difficult. In that case, you can always use the bee catcher method to get a hold of it. You can opt from the one which is either one which will or not kill. The choice is yours. Bees anyways have a very short life span so we recommend killing them for once and for all because if they stay, there is a chance that they might bite your kids or your animal and the situation can get very uncomfortable. You can either buy the bee catcher directly from the market or else you can opt to make one yourself. Things you will need:

Maple Syrup2 tbsp
WaterHalf a cup
Soda Bottle2 Ltr
Scissors1
Stapler1

Process:

  1. Take a soda bottle and cut it using a scissor right where the slope ends.
  2. Now, add 2 tbsp of maple syrup and half a cup of water into it.
  3. Once you put the ingredients in, let it settle and then place the top part in such a way that the bee enters it. You have to make the placement in such a way that they enter the solution but cannot get out without your wish.
  4. Stape the sides to ensure that the bee cannot come out and the solution stays intact too.

This will do the trick. The maple syrup will attract the bees in and it will become impossible for them to leave the trap. This is also very economical a solution. You can opt for honey if maple syrup is too expensive a choice for you. Once they struggle and die you can let it go.

Move the Hive

While killing them is a good option, you can also move the hive. This will solve the problem once and for all. You don't have to do it yourself. Plus it is also very risky. We recommend getting help from a professional for this. It is a very risky job so don't even try to look at a tutorial or something online and trying it yourself. It will leave you with nothing but a lot of swelling and inflammation.

However, if you actually try to do this on your own then we recommend grabbing it gently and slowly and moving it to a completely new destination. It is after this that you can protect the fencing and ensure they never come back.

Dusting

When we say dusting, we don't mean cleaning the house. While that is important, with dusting, what we truly mean is using the dust insecticides to kill the bees altogether. They work very similarly to how the spray repellents work. The preparation is also pretty much the same. You can get this done either from a professional or you can opt to do it yourself as well. The things to keep in mind if you are planning to do things yourself is to make sure that you are wearing proper clothes which cover your entire body.

Also, make sure you have thick gloves on your hand. Keep your eyes well protected as well. The one thing that you need for this particular method is a foam sealant. You have to keep it ready so that you can block the hive as soon as you are done applying the dust repellent onto the area where you spot the bees. The best way to deal with this is to apply the dust directly onto the hive. Make sure you apply it as much as you can. Take the dust spray and seal the entrance entirely. This will confirm that everything inside the hive dies.

Organic Ways

If chemicals make you twitch, there are a lot of organic ways as well which you can use in order to get rid of the bees for good. The best part about these methods is that it does not harm anyone at all. If you have kids, babies or even pets, using this method will be the best way to deal with this problem. This way no one is harmed. Plus it is also great for someone who is using it. The mix will be so subtle that in no ways it will have any bad impact even on the one who is applying it. Here are a few methods which can work effectively when it comes to treating the bees problem using organic ways.

#1 Vinegar Mix

Vinegar is a great ingredient when it comes to treating bees problems. It is not something that will kill or work on the bee directly but its fumes tend to stun the bees. This makes them stay in its place without moving and what you can do with it is that you can spray a repellent directly onto the bee. The stunned bee will also ensure that you are safe. It won't come attacking you after coming in contact with the spray. There is a solution that you can make which you can keep stored with you. You can use it whenever you spot the bees and it will do its charm.

Things you will need:

Vinegar1 cup
Water1 cup
Spray Bottle1

Process:

  1. Take a spray bottle, add 1 cup filled with vinegar and 1 cup full of water into it.
  2. Close the bottle shut and mix both the ingredients really well.
  3. Make sure that they have mixed into each other really well.
  4. Now, all you have to do is spray the solution either directly onto the hive or near the hive.
  5. It will stun the bee and then make it very easy for you to kill them.

#2 MothBall

Mothball is the solution to everything. We mean all kinds of insects. Using them regularly will ensure that they never come back. All you have to do to follow this method is to hang the mothballs near the hive. That is it. it will do the trick. It is its smell which does the trick. You can use a sock to hang them. The smell will irritate the bees a lot and they will ultimately make their hive in some other place and move permanently. This method is also very economical and you can use it how many ever times you want. As soon as you spot them, you can toss 5-10 balls into a sock and tie it up near the hive. It will keep the bees away.

#3 Soda Pop

Soda pop is also a way you can treat the bee with. It is what we have mentioned above in dust method as well. Sodas smell tends to attract the bees to the bottle and as soon as they fall into the bottle, they tend to get trapped and die. The solution will also make it easier for the bees to drown in and die eventually. This is also the most convenient way of getting rid of their dead bodies once they are dead.

#4 Zapper

For people who don't know what a zapper is, it is an electronic device which helps in killing the insects. They come in the form of strips as well and not just the big sized machine. All you have to do is hang or place the strip near the hive and that should do the work. You honestly don't need anything more than this in order to deal with the bees. The bees will get stuck to the sticky texture of the machine and get caught and eventually die. You can easily purchase these from a grocery store nearby.

#5 Soapy Boiling Mint Water

While this might seem very weird a solution, it actually works and works brilliantly. If you want to permanently get rid of the bees then the only solid way is to attack the hive directly. Otherwise, they will keep coming back. The bees have zero tolerance when it comes to something boiling and hot hence this method will work like magic. Use this and you will be free. Why mint you might think. Well, it has the power to kill almost any insect possible. Things you will need:

Water2 cup
Peppermint Castile Soap2 cups
Kettle Boiling Water1

Process:

  1. Take a kettle and fill it with 2 cups of water. Bring it to boil.
  2. Now, take peppermint castile soap solution and add 2 cups of it into the solution.
  3. You can also opt to add mint leaves but the effect won't be very strong with that.
  4. Let the mint also boil and then turn the kettle off.
  5. Transfer it into a vessel and throw the hot water onto the beehive.
  6. That's it. That is all that you need.

Before jumping onto doing this, we recommend being 100% prepared when it comes to dressing yourself. Cover your entire body and make sure that you wear protective gloves as well. There is a fair chance that the bees might come out so you don't need any part of your body exposed which can get bitten from the bees. Instead of directly pouring it up close, we also recommend using an extension, like a water can or something in order to keep yourself protected even more.

Note: Run once you have done pouring it into the nest. The bees might come out and in their defense come to bite you.

Tarp The Nest

This mind sounds a little risky but is actually one of the quickest ways of getting rid of bees. Not everyone is okay with using chemicals on the insects or in the house. This can be very harmful to your kids or even your pets. If going environmentally friendly is your way to deal with things then tarping the nest can be your best way of dealing with this situation. But yes, it can be a little risky so we would love to warn you beforehand. All you have to do is place a tarp right on top of the hive and this will do the trick. You seal the tarp then with a heavy material like a brick or stone.

The best time to perform this is procedure is during the night. This is because it is during the night that the hive is filled with bees. This method is risky because the bees are inside the hive when you are performing this procedure and you are risking agitating them which can lead them to sting you. The one way that you can make sure you are safe is by wearing clothes which are dark in colour. This way, you will attract less attention to you when you do this. It will be better for you to take help from someone instead of doing this all by yourself.

D-Force HPX

While we might genuinely hate it, but chemicals are the fastest way to get over anything. Be it any kind of insect. Bees for that matter are comparatively less difficult to handle. You can use the D-Force HPX in order to get rid of all kinds of bees that have made a house of their own at your house. It is an insecticide which comes in a pressed can with Deltamethrin being the core ingredient. It is a synthetic pyrethroid. We understand that all this might be sounding too science-ish to you right now but it truly works. The way it works is that it breaks the nervous system of bees down.

This practically means, while you use this, you paralyze them after which the bees eventually dies. The perfect thing about this mix is how well it can work at specific locations. You don't have to vacate the whole house in order to spray it. This becomes bigger an inconvenience. You can apply the spray directly onto the hive, or the bees itself. It provides near about 8 weeks of protection and can be used both indoors as well as outdoors. All you have to do is follow the instruction properly by keeping yourself well clothed and keeping your hands well covered with thick gloves.

Call For Help

If you cannot do this all by yourself, we recommend getting professional help instead of taking things in your control. If you are doubtful, then there sure is a reason why you should be leaving it to the experts and not do it yourself. You don't even need an expert or someone who would charge you a million bucks for it. Just someone who can do the task in the neatest way so that no bees escape. That's about it. Just because you are calling for external help, it does not mean that you will have to settle for a chemical method of getting the bees out of your way. You can always request them to use the natural way of treating this problem and they sure will have a solution for it.

This is not a method where the bees will stay alive. They will die for sure so take the decision wisely. Professional help will surely cost you more but at least the task will be done in the most appropriate way. These might also take more than one setting to completely get rid of the bees. They will be first used to kill the bees of the surface and then later when the new pupa emerges, they will be cleared again. Exterminators usually only kill bees, and will not remove the nest itself or the dead bees, so keep this in mind.

Now that you are well aware of the different methods through which you can get the bees out completely, we recommend getting rid of them as soon as possible. They can harm the person with one single bite and while most of them don't have venom in them, their bite can cause agitation, inflammation, redness and also a swelling which might not be hurtful but for sure uncomfortable.

Opt for the one that best suits you and goes about it. Just make sure that you keep yourself well covered with even your hands covered in thick gloves. This way, while you are dealing with their hive and the bees, you will keep yourself well protected from the above-listed discomfort.
